Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and Dhaka Customs House in a joint operation seized at least 16 kilograms of gold bars concealed inside fruit crates at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Sunday.
Dhaka Customs House Joint Commissioner Kamrul Hasan confirmed the development.
He said the operation was carried out in the afternoon following intelligence information about a suspected gold smuggling attempt. The gold bars had been carefully concealed inside imported fruit crates using a sophisticated method.
Investigators suspect the consignment was part of an attempt by a smuggling syndicate to bring the precious metal into the country under the cover of a legitimate fruit shipment.
Sources said the recovered gold weighs at least 16 kilograms.
However, authorities have yet to disclose its estimated market value.
Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to identify and arrest those involved in the smuggling attempt.
The probe is also focused on tracing the ownership of the seized gold, determining the origin of the shipment, and dismantling the network behind the trafficking operation.
Officials said additional details would be released as the investigation progresses.
