Authorities in Jhenaidah have reclaimed 131 decimals of government land belonging to the Roads and Highways Department after evicting long-time illegal occupants on Sunday.
The eviction drive was carried out at the truck terminal adjacent to the BRAC office in Kanchanpur mouza along Shahid Mashiur Rahman Road in Jhenaidah town.
The operation was jointly conducted by the district administration and the RHD.
Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Mehedi Hasan led the eviction alongside RHD Sub-Divisional Engineer Jia Uddin, Assistant Engineer Ahsan Ul Kabir and other officials.
RHD Executive Engineer Md Hafizur Rahman said the 131 decimals of land had been acquired for the department’s use but had been under illegal occupation for nearly 20 years.
“Truck parking, unauthorised structures and sand trading were going on here illegally. We issued public notices and made announcements asking the occupants to vacate. As they did not comply, we carried out today’s eviction with support from the district administration, police and RAB,” he said.
He added that the reclaimed land will now be used for RHD activities.
Hafizur Rahman also noted that several other RHD properties remain under illegal occupation in the district, and further eviction drives will be conducted to free those as well.
