A Mymensingh court has placed 12 individuals on three-day remand in connection with a case filed over the brutal killing of garment worker Dipu Chandra Das.
Mymensingh Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahadat Hossain passed the order on Monday following a petition filed by police seeking five-day remand for interrogation.
After hearing both sides, the court passed the order.
The accused include Alamgir Hossain, 38, Miraj Hossain, 46, Tarek Hossain, 19, Limon Sarker, 22, Manik Mia, 20, Ershad Ali, 39, Nijhum Uddin, 20, Azmal Hasan, 26, Ashiqur Rahman, 25, Kaiyum, 25, Shahin Mia, 19, and Nazmul, 21.
Several of them are employees of Pioneer Knitwears (BD) Limited, while others are residents of Bhaluka and Brahmanbaria.
Inspector Mostasinur Rahman of Mymensingh Police Station said the police had sought the remand to investigate the murder, which was reportedly motivated by allegations that derogatory remarks were made about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Lawyers represented all accused during the hearing.
According to reports, Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death by a mob and later set on fire on 18 December in Dubaliyapara, Hobirbari Union, Bhaluka. His body was later found hanging from a tree along the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.
Dipu Chandra Das, 27, son of Rabi Chandra Das, hailed from Mokamiakanda village in Tarakanda Upazila’s Banihala Union.
His brother, Apu Chandra Das, filed a case on 19 December against 140–150 unidentified individuals in connection with the killing.
