At least 20 people were injured, including 11 with gunshot wounds, during a violent clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy in Kulanj village under Derai upazila of Sunamganj on Friday afternoon.
According to local sources, a long-standing rivalry between current union member Mahbub and Elaich Mia, and former member Elias Mia escalated into a gunfight around Friday afternoon. Both sides reportedly used firearms and local weapons during the hour-long confrontation.
Pintu Das, residential medical officer of Derai Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the incident. “At least 20 injured people were brought to the hospital, 11 of them with gunshot wounds,” he said. “Eight of the seriously injured have been referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, while the others received primary treatment at the health complex.”
Following the clash, a tense situation prevailed in the area. Police have been deployed to prevent further violence. “The situation is now under control,” said Uttam Kumar, officer-in-charge of Derai Police Station. “Legal action will be taken after receiving a written complaint.”
Earlier on 20 June, one person was shot during another clash between the same groups. The army later conducted a raid to recover illegal weapons, during which one person was killed in an exchange of gunfire between the army and suspected miscreants.
