More than 50 people, including police officers, journalists, and a BNP leader, sustained injuries during a violent clash between residents of 10 villages in Bhanga Upazila of Faridpur on Sunday.
The conflict, which erupted at 8am and persisted until 1:30pm, led to a four-hour blockade of Faridpur-Bhanga-Barishal highway.
The prolonged siege resulted in thousands of vehicles being stranded on both sides of the road, causing immense suffering for passengers.
According to police and local sources, the violence originated from a long-standing dispute over territorial dominance between residents of several villages under Hamirdi and Manikdaha unions.
The situation escalated over the occupation of Pukuria bus stand, pitting supporters of Sultan Matubbar from Manikdaha Union against those of Siru Mollah from Hamirdi Union.
Armed with local weapons, the villagers took positions on either side of Pukuria bus stand, triggering widespread panic throughout the area.
Although police from multiple stations arrived at the scene and fired several rounds of tear gas shells, they were initially unable to bring the situation under control.
The injured include Bhanga Police Station Officer in Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman, a circle police officer, and several other police members.
Additionally, Bhanga Upazila BNP President Khandaker Iqbal Hossain Selim and several journalists were among those reported hurt during the skirmish.
OC Mizanur said additional forces have been requested from the district headquarters to restore order and bring the situation under control.
