State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (LGRD) Mir Shahe Alam has claimed that the then chief adviser Muhammad Yunus visited London to meet “captain” Tarique Rahman to deliver a “trophy,” and bring back the date for election.
“This is because Yunus recognises the true captain,” Alam told the House. He made these remarks on Tuesday while participating in a discussion on the President’s speech during a session of 13th National Parliament.
Discussing the legacy of BNP, the state minister stated that the party is an organisation that embodies three historic movements and holds the “trophies” for all of them. He argued that no other political party in the history of Bangladesh can showcase such a record.
“The trophies of 1971, 1990, and July-August are all in our house. The Awami League can speak of ’71 and ’90, but the trophy of July-August is not in their house. Friends in the opposition can speak of July-August, but the trophies of ’71 and ’90 are not in theirs,” he said.
Referring to political history, Alam noted that Jamaat-e-Islami had contested the 1986 election in alliance with the Awami League, whereas the BNP did not. He emphasised that the BNP is the only party that holds the “three trophies” of 1971, 1990, and July-August.
Alam also addressed a recent comment made by a leader of National Citizen Party (NCP), who reportedly suggested that while the students and the public “played” during the July-August movement, the BNP had walked away with the trophy.
“We were all with the students and the public during the July-August movement. We did not go to anyone to take the trophy,” Alam added.
