Muggers seriously injured a college student named Ababil Aditya Al Islam, 22, by stabbing him in Jatrabari Shanir Akhra area in the capital.
An iPhone 16 Pro, an S20 Ultra phone, and money were allegedly snatched from Aditya.
The incident occurred around 2:30am at midnight on Monday. He was rescued in serious condition and is being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Alif Hossain Rohan, a neighbour from his village who rescued him and brought him to the hospital, said Aditya’s home is in Boyla village in Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila.
Aditya is a third-year Honours student at Gurudayal Government College in Kishoreganj.
However, he used to live in Shanir Akhra area of Jatrabari. He had been preparing for his IELTS there for one year.
Rohan said last night, Aditya called him from a number and informed him that muggers had attacked him with a sharp weapon in Shanir Akhra.
He then went to the spot, rescued Aditya, and brought him to the hospital. Later, he learned that Aditya had left his house at night to buy his own medicine and was passing under the Shanir Akhra underpass bridge.
At that time, two teenagers blocked his path and demanded whatever he had.
When he initially refused, a scuffle broke out between Aditya and them. At that moment, three more youths came from the side and indiscriminately stabbed him with a sharp weapon, injuring him after snatching his belongings.
Meanwhile, citing doctors, Md. Faruk, In-Charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said the youth was brought to the hospital in the early morning. He is currently undergoing treatment in the emergency department.
The incident has been reported to the Jatrabari Police Station.
