A Rohingya youth was killed after a landmine explosion at Reju Amtali border area of Ghumdhum union in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban on Tuesday morning.
The explosion occurred around 9am near Border Pillar No. 40, reportedly triggered by a landmine planted in the area.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Khalek, 30, son of Md Anu Mia, a resident of Block C of Kutupalong Rohingya Camp-1 in Ukhiya.
Local sources said Abdul Khalek was on his way to work in a tree plantation near the border when the explosion occurred, leaving him critically injured.
He was later taken to MSF Hospital in Kutupalong, where doctors declared him dead.
Local Union Parishad member Shafiqul Islam said landmines laid in border and zero-line areas amid ongoing conflict in Myanmar have led to repeated casualties.
He alleged that the Arakan Army has planted mines in the area, resulting in frequent deaths and injuries among civilians.
Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, commanding officer of Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB), confirmed the incident, saying there remains a continued risk of landmine explosions along the border.
He urged locals and Rohingyas to avoid unnecessary movement near the frontier and said surveillance and awareness activities have been intensified.
Earlier incidents include the death of a 12-year-old boy in a mortar shell explosion on 2 June in Toingazhiri border area, and the killing of three members of the Tanchangya community in a landmine blast on 24 May between border pillars 41 and 42.
In the past two weeks, five people have been killed in separate landmine and mortar shell explosions along the Naikhongchhari border, raising serious security concerns among residents in the border area.
