A university student home from Malaysia was hacked to death by a friend in Trishal upazila on Thursday, police said.
The victim, 22-year-old Muntasir Fahim, was the eldest son of Rezaul Islam Badal of Chikna village in Sadar upazila. He was enrolled at City University Malaysia and had returned to Bangladesh four months ago after the campus temporarily closed. He was scheduled to fly back on Saturday.
Around 9 pm, the accused Ohedul Islam Anik walked into Trishal Police Station carrying a Chinese axe and told officers, “Fahim ruined my life, so I killed him with a Chinese axe.”
Police detained Anik and recovered Fahim’s body from the eastern side of the Trishal Government Nazrul Academy school grounds. Anik is the son of Zahirul Mandal of Ward 4 under Trishal Municipality.
Fahim’s father said he had no idea why his son was killed. He claimed Anik had planned the attack over a previous dispute and demanded justice.
Trishal Police Station officer-in-charge Mansur Ahmed said the two had been close friends but had a longstanding conflict. “There was an argument between them at night. At one point, Anik hacked Fahim with an axe, killing him on the spot,” he said.
Police said Fahim’s body has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Anik remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
