Three people were shot and six injured in a clash between two rival groups in Brahmanbaria’s Kandipara area on Thursday evening amid an ongoing dispute over establishing local dominance.
The gunfight broke out in front of a printing press on Kandipara T A Road, police said. Local residents and firefighters rushed the injured to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, from where two critically wounded victims were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The injured were identified as Tutul, 46, Shihab, 27, and Saju Mia.
Tension quickly spread across the neighbourhood after the incident, prompting authorities to deploy additional police to restore order.
Dr Nur Ibne Bin Sifat, a duty doctor at the district hospital, said three individuals hurt by rubber bullets were receiving treatment there.
Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Azharul Islam said the violence stemmed from an ongoing conflict between Kandipara resident Sakil and district Swechchhasebak Dal president Delip. He said investigators were also looking into whether any other motive was involved.
“Those responsible will be brought under the law,” he said.
