A Rohingya youth was critically injured Thursday afternoon after a landmine exploded along the Anjuman Para border area in Ukhiya Upazila, Cox’s Bazar.
The injured, Mohammad Shahidul, 25, a resident of Block F-5 in Rohingya Camp-16 and son of Chan Mia, had reportedly left the refugee camp illegally to fish along the Naf River.
The incident occurred around 12:45pm near the zero line of the river in Palongkhali Union, according to Lieutenant Colonel Md Zahurul Islam, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Ukhiya 64 Battalion.
He was accompanied by several other Rohingya people at the time of the explosion.
Lt Col Zahurul Islam said the blast occurred suddenly while Shahidul was fishing on the bank of the river, severing his right ankle and causing severe injuries to multiple parts of his body.
Local residents rescued Shahidul and rushed him to the MSF Hospital in Kutupalong, Ukhiya.
He was later referred to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
