Caleb Yirenkyi scored deep into stoppage time as Ghana edged Panama 1-0 in a hard fought FIFA World Cup 2026 match in Toronto on Thursday.
The match looked set to end without a goal after both teams failed to make the most of their chances for more than 90 minutes.
Ghana enjoyed a strong spell in the first half and pushed forward with purpose. Kamaldeen Sulemana and Jordan Ayew caused problems with their pace, but Panama’s defence stood firm.
Panama improved after the break and created several dangerous attacks of its own. The Central American side moved the ball well and looked capable of finding a breakthrough, but Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi remained alert.
As the clock ticked down, both teams continued to search for a winner. However, clear chances were hard to come by as the defenders kept control for long periods.
The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time. Substitute Brandon Thomas Asante broke into space on the right and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Yirenkyi timed his run perfectly and guided the ball into the net from close range.
The late strike sparked celebrations among the Ghana players and supporters as Panama was left stunned by the dramatic finish.
Panama pushed forward in the final moments but could not find an equaliser before the referee blew for full time.
The victory gave Ghana a winning start to its World Cup campaign and valuable points in Group L. Panama, meanwhile, was left to reflect on a missed opportunity after matching its opponent for much of the contest.
