Barcelona snatched a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the Champions League last-16 first leg at St James’ Park on Tuesday night. Harvey Barnes looked set to hand Eddie Howe’s side a famous victory before Lamine Yamal drilled a 96th-minute penalty past Aaron Ramsdale to rip the noise out of Tyneside.
St James’ Park crackled long before kick-off. Fireworks burst above the stadium and the Gallowgate End unfurled a banner dreaming of Budapest. Newcastle’s players fed off that roar and refused to bow to Barcelona’s reputation.
Joelinton set the tone early with a crunching challenge on Yamal. The Brazilian midfielder welcomed the teenage star to Tyneside the hard way and Newcastle pressed high, snapping into tackles and forcing Barca into rushed passes.
Barcelona struggled to impose their rhythm. Lewis Hall tracked Yamal closely and allowed the winger just a single glimpse in the first half, forcing the youngster into a shot that Ramsdale pushed into the side netting.
Eddie Howe sensed opportunity after the break and rolled the dice. He threw on Jacob Murphy, Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon in a triple attacking switch, chasing a moment that could echo the famous 1997 night when Tino Asprilla ripped Barcelona apart.
The gamble paid off. Gordon slipped a pass wide, Murphy whipped in a cross, and Barnes smashed a first-time finish beyond Joan Garcia in the 86th minute. St James’ Park erupted.
Barnes soaked in a standing ovation when he trudged off moments later. The winger believed he had delivered the defining strike of Newcastle’s modern European story.
Barcelona had other plans. Substitute Dani Olmo darted into the box deep in stoppage time and Malick Thiaw clipped him clumsily. The referee pointed straight to the spot and handed Barcelona a lifeline.
Yamal stepped forward with the calm of a veteran. Boos rained down from every stand but the teenager ignored the noise and sent Ramsdale the wrong way with ruthless precision.
Barcelona’s bench exploded in celebration while Newcastle’s players collapsed in disbelief. The Catalans escaped with a draw despite offering little in open play.
The tie now heads to the Nou Camp level. Barcelona will fancy their chances on home turf, but Newcastle have already shown they can rattle them. If Howe’s side press with the same bite next week, Flick’s defence will face another long night.
