A 65-year-old man was killed in a suspected wild elephant attack in the Garo Hills area of Bakshiganj upazila in Jamalpur, police and local residents said.
The victim, Zainal Abedin, was a resident of Mirdhapara village in Dhanua Kamalpur Union. He was son of the late Romiz Mia.
According to local sources, Zainal left his home on Friday morning to collect firewood from the nearby hills but failed to return by evening. Concerned family members searched for him throughout the night before resuming the search on Saturday morning with relatives and local people.
His crushed body was later found in a forest near Somnath Para in the Garo Hills.
Locals believe he was attacked and killed by a wild elephant during the night.
Officer-in-Charge of Bakshiganj Police Station Makbul Hossain said police had been sent to the scene.
He said legal action would be taken after speaking with the victim’s family.
