(Spoilers ahead)
Stranger Things Season 5 has finally arrived on Netflix and while the final chapter returns to familiar horrors, it also introduces a new and unsettling presence: Mr Whatsit. At first mentioned innocently by young Holly Wheeler, the figure quickly becomes one of the series’ most disturbing twists.
Set three days before the fourth anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance in November 1987, the new season is steeped in dread from the outset. Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), far from defeated, is lurking in the shadows and waiting for the perfect moment to resume his reign of terror. But this time, his reach extends directly into the imaginations of Hawkins’ children.
Holly’s ‘imaginary’ friend
Holly (played by Nell Fisher) casually tells Mike (Finn Wolfhard) that she has made a new friend she calls Mr Whatsit, a name seemingly inspired by the cosmic guardian Mrs Whatsit from A Wrinkle in Time. She claims he has promised to rescue her from Hawkins’ monsters, something Mike initially dismisses as a child’s fantasy.
However, Episode 2 exposes the truth: Mr Whatsit is no benign protector. He is Vecna in his Henry Creel form, manipulating Holly from within her own imagination.
Vecna’s new strategy
Rather than simply hunting isolated teens as he did before, Vecna now appears to be targeting multiple children across Hawkins, with plans to abduct them into a twisted psychological dimension he has constructed, one shaped by memories of his childhood home.
Will (Noah Schnapp), still tethered to Vecna through the hive mind of the Upside Down, notices that his visions now allow him to glimpse what Vecna’s victims see. This insight leads the group to attempt a risky plan: tracking a Demogorgon that Vecna unleashes on his next target, young Derek Turnbow (Jake Connelly), in hopes of finding Holly’s whereabouts.
Max’s fate revealed
The mysteries deepen further in Episode 3, when Holly learns that Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) has been mentally imprisoned within Vecna’s mindscape ever since he attacked her in the Season 4 finale. Her body may be in the real world, but her consciousness remains trapped.
Season 5 is being released in two volumes.
Volume 1: Four episodes now streaming.
Volume 2: Three episodes arriving on Christmas Day.
Finale: Premieres on New Year’s Eve.
