Pakistan great Wasim Akram has hailed Bangladesh’s historic nine-wicket Test victory over Australia, praising the Tigers’ progress in the longest format and singling out Hasan Mahmud and Tanzid Hasan Tamim for special recognition.
Bangladesh secured their first Test win on Australian soil on Sunday, August 16, completing a stunning victory in Darwin after dominating large parts of the four-day contest.
Akram, one of cricket’s greatest fast bowlers, praised Bangladesh in a post on X and highlighted the discipline behind their performance against a full-strength Australia. He pointed to the team’s preparation, confidence and growing belief in Test cricket.
Hasan Mahmud drew particular praise. Akram admired the pacer’s ability to succeed without relying heavily on variations, instead repeatedly hitting the right line and length.
Hasan set the tone in Australia’s first innings. The hosts chose to bat first but collapsed for 198, with the right-armer claiming six wickets. Bangladesh then produced 426 to take a commanding 228-run lead.
Tanzid also made a major contribution to the breakthrough victory. The opener showed remarkable restraint to score 101 from 197 balls, hitting eight fours and a six. His century helped Bangladesh build control after Australia’s quicks threatened to test their inexperienced top order.
Australia fought harder in the second innings, with Cameron Green producing a century. But Bangladesh kept applying pressure and dismissed the hosts for 284.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed five wickets, while Hasan added three more to finish with nine wickets in the match. Bangladesh then needed only 57 runs to complete the historic chase.
They reached the target in 14.2 overs, losing one wicket. Mominul Haque finished unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam made 25.
The victory gave Bangladesh their first Test success in Australia after waiting 23 years to return for another series. It also strengthened the growing reputation of their pace attack, with Hasan leading a bowling unit that repeatedly unsettled Australia on home soil.
