Voting has begun in the Bogura-6 by-election and the Sherpur-3 national election.
The polling started at 7:30am on Thursday and will continue without any break until 4:30pm.
In the 13th parliamentary election held on 12 February, voting took place in 299 constituencies. BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman was elected from two seats. Later he vacated Bogura-6, leading to the by-election now being held there.
Meanwhile, voting in Sherpur-3 was postponed after the death of a candidate following announcement of the general election schedule.
The election is now being conducted in the constituency. Since the result during the parliamentary election favored the “Yes” vote, no separate referendum is required there.
In Bogura-6 constituency, there are 150 polling centres and 835 booths, with a total of 4,50,309 registered voters.
On the other hand, in the Sherpur-3 constituency, there are 128 polling centres and 751 booths, with a total of 4,09,806 registered voters.
Md Monir Hossain, deputy secretary of the Election Commission’s election management wing, said 18 to 20 security personnel have been deployed at each polling centre, depending on importance. In addition, 36 executive and judicial magistrates are on duty.
Postal ballots are available in both constituencies. Returning and assistant returning officers from the EC are overseeing the polls. Around 5,000 election officials including presiding, assistant presiding, and polling officers are working in the field.
Alongside 18 EC observers, more than 400 local observers are monitoring the electoral process.
