A van driver was stabbed to death in Rangpur’s Badarganj upazila on Tuesday evening as a clash between two rival juvenile gangs escalated into violence.

The victim, Ariful Islam, 30, son of Rezaul Islam of the area, was attacked at Ambia Mor in Baluabhata.

The incident followed a dispute between the Mominul Islam group and the Firoz Shah group, said Badarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hasan Zahid Sarker.

Members of both groups had gone to Rangpur earlier in the day to attend a court hearing.

At the court premises, members of the Firoz group attacked Mominul, though the issue was later settled there.

Tension resurfaced after the groups returned to the locality. Police said supporters of Mominul later searched for rivals and attacked Firoz’s house in the Collegepara area.

In response, members of the Firoz group began looking for Mominul’s supporters. They found Ariful alone at Ambia Mor and stabbed him repeatedly.

He was taken to the upazila hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.

Police arrested one suspect, Jamal Hossain, 22, a member of the Firoz group, in connection with the killing. The body was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem.

The victim’s father said his son had been resting at the intersection after driving his van when attackers struck him indiscriminately and demanded justice.

The officer-in-charge said a case is being processed and drives are ongoing to arrest others involved.
