Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon sought UNESCO’s assistance in drafting an effective roadmap to tackle modern-era challenges, expressing a keen interest in using the organisation’s knowledge and expertise.
He made these remarks during a courtesy meeting with the UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh Susan Vize at his ministry office on Wednesday.
During the discussion, Swapon remarked, “There is immense scope for the government to work jointly with UNESCO in various areas of the media sector.”
Vize briefed him on UNESCO’s ongoing initiatives in Bangladesh, particularly regarding media development, policy frameworks, and efforts to counter misinformation and disinformation.
She noted that UNESCO is focusing on strengthening fact-checking measures to prevent the spread of propaganda, including the implementation of training programmes for university students across the country.
Swapon highlighted the necessity of training in fact-checking to curb the spread of misinformation and requested UNESCO’s cooperation in this field.
In response, Vize assured the minister of comprehensive support regarding these matters.
The meeting was also attended by the State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury and Secretary Mahbuba Farjana.
