Two women were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run autorickshaw and a locally made three-wheeler in Melandah upazila of Jamalpur on Sunday.
The accident occurred near Betmari village at around 1:30pm when the autorickshaw, travelling from Dewanganj to Jamalpur, collided with the three-wheeler, locally known as a bhotbhoti, coming from the opposite direction, police said.
The identities of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately.
The injured were identified as Mojibor, 55, Jibon Mia, 35, and Tushar, 38. All three are residents of the Katharbil area in Dewanganj upazila.
Police said all five passengers of the autorickshaw sustained serious injuries in the collision.
Local people rescued them and took them to Jamalpur General Hospital.
Dr Ujjwal Kumar Sarkar, medical officer at the hospital’s emergency department, said five people injured in the accident were brought to the hospital.
“Two women were dead before being brought to the hospital, while the remaining three are undergoing treatment,” he said.
The bodies were kept at the hospital morgue.
Melandah Police Station Officer-in-Charge ATM Mahmudul Haque said police went to the hospital after receiving information about the accident.
He said efforts were under way to identify the two women.
