Two endangered, Grey-bellied Sea Eagles were rescued in Jhenaidah within two days. One of them was released into the wild by local nature enthusiasts, while the other was handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Department by the locals.
On Thursday morning, one eagle became trapped in a fishing net stretched over a sponge gourd field belonging to Hafizul Islam in Chapathla Pipulbari village of Maheshpur upazila.
A local noticed the bird struggling in the net and rescued it. He brought it to Swaruppur Bazar, where Nazmul Hossain, a local volunteer who works on nature and wildlife conservation took safekeeping of the bird.
Nazmul Hossain said, “Around 11 am on Thursday, I received news that an eagle had been caught and people were gathering around it at Swaruppur Bazar. I went there and took it into my care. After informing the Forest Department, they advised me to release the bird back into nature. So, along with Kamruzzaman, the assistant land officer of Swaruppur, and some locals, we released the eagle.”
Meanwhile, on Wednesday afternoon, another eagle of the same species got trapped in a net placed over a dragon fruit field owned by Md Minarul Islam in Safdarpur village of Kotchandpur upazila.
Locals informed the Forest Department, and officials from the Kotchandpur Forest Office rescued the bird.
Md Shafiqul Islam, acting officer of the Kotchandpur Forest Department, said, “After receiving news we rescued it on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, in consultation with the divisional forest officer, we handed over the bird to Md Jahangir Alam, acting officer of the Jessore Wildlife Management Division, and Wildlife Keeper Md Elias Hossain.”
He added that it was a young eagle.
