A senior Iranian adviser has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s move to extend the ceasefire, saying it means “nothing” and is “certainly a ploy to buy time for a surprise strike”.
Mahdi Mohammadi is an adviser to the Iranian parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, reports BBC.
In a post in Persian on X, He said the continuation of Trump’s “siege” is “no different from bombardment” and must be “met with a military response”.
He added, “The time for Iran to take the initiative has come.”
Meanwhile, tensions have escalated in the region as the US Navy continues operations around the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen weeks of disruption after Iran effectively restricted movement through the key shipping route.
On Sunday, US naval forces boarded an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel, further heightening tensions following the recent disruptions to maritime traffic in the busy waterway.
