A professor from Rajshahi University(RU) has died in a motorcycle accident early Friday morning, and another professor has been seriously injured.
The incident occurred around 5:30 AM on the Naogaon-Rajshahi highway near the Nohata Ansar-VDP camp in Paba Upazila.
The deceased, Professor Shib Shankar Roy, of the Marketing Department, was traveling on a motorcycle with Professor Asaduzzaman Badsha of the Philosophy Department. Professor Roy died at the scene, while Professor Badsha was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Paba Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam confirmed the incident and said that the professors were on their way to a fishing trip when the accident occurred. However, it remains unclear whether the motorcycle lost control or if another vehicle was involved, as there were no witnesses at the scene. Investigations are ongoing.
According to firefighter Touhidul Islam, the team responded to the incident at 5:55 AM after receiving calls from locals. “One was found dead, and the other was injured. We transported them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Locals informed us that a truck might have been involved in the accident,” he said.
Shankar K. Bishwas, the spokesperson and Emergency Department in-charge at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, confirmed that Professor Roy was brought in dead. Meanwhile, Professor Badsha is receiving treatment in ward 31 of the hospital and is under observation.
Rajshahi University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Mohammad Farid Uddin Khan, who visited the hospital, said, “The two professors were on their way to a fishing trip this morning when the tragedy occurred. We are still uncertain about how the accident took place. This is an extremely sorrowful day for Rajshahi University.”
