Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway resumed after being suspended for about two and a half hours on Wednesday night, following a protest triggered by a road accident in the Hariken area of Gazipur city’s Chaydana.
According to local sources, a pedestrian sustained severe leg injuries after being hit by a truck while crossing the highway.
Locals immediately rescued the injured man and rushed him to a hospital. Agitated by the incident, residents and onlookers took to the road around 8:30pm, blocking the highway and halting traffic.
As a result, a long tailback formed on both sides of the road, causing immense suffering for commuters.
Law enforcement officials tried to pacify the protesters but failed to clear the blockade initially. Later, members of the army intervened and dispersed the crowd. Traffic finally resumed around 11:00pm.
Gazipur Metropolitan Gacha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam confirmed the incident, saying that the blockade was a reaction to the accident. “We persuaded the protesters to leave the highway, and vehicular movement has now returned to normal,” he said.
