A centuries-old rural tradition captured the imagination of thousands as the much-awaited bullfight took place in Kalia upazila, drawing villagers from near and far to witness a vibrant celebration of heritage and community.
Organized by Nabīn Juba Sangha, the bullfight was held at the Raghunathpur Girls’ High School ground on Saturday morning, transforming the usually quiet venue into a bustling festival. The event attracted spectators in droves, with people from surrounding areas arriving early to secure a spot. By noon, every corner of the field was packed—audience members lined the perimeter, perched on rooftops, verandas, and even trees, eagerly watching the spectacle unfold. The excitement was palpable, with children, teenagers, and the elderly all joining in the fun.
This year, 30 bulls participated in the contest, representing villages such as Arpara, Jadabpur, Sholpur, Mirjapur, and Perli. The intense competition showcased the strength and agility of the animals, thrilling the crowd.
Subuddhi Biswas, a local villager from Mirjapur, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm: “Fifteen of us came together by nosimon (easy-bike) to enjoy the bullfight. Watching it live is something special, but if it hadn’t rained, the crowd would have enjoyed it even more,” he said.
While the event provided ample entertainment, organizers emphasized its cultural significance. “Bullfighting is not just a sport; it’s a vital expression of our rural heritage. It brings communities together and preserves a long-standing tradition that defines the spirit of our villages. This event is an important way to ensure that future generations continue to experience this part of our culture,” the organizers stated.
The bullfight in Narail’s Kalia upazila not only showcased the enduring appeal of traditional sports but also highlighted the deep-rooted connection between rural communities and their cultural practices, providing a vivid reminder of Bengal’s rural identity.
