Tottenham Hotspur have said they are supporting defender Destiny Udogie after confirming the Italy international was allegedly threatened with a gun by a football agent in London.
The Metropolitan Police are investigating the incident, which took place on 6 September. BBC Sport reported on Monday that an unnamed Premier League footballer had been targeted, with another man also allegedly blackmailed and threatened by the same individual. No injuries were reported.
Police confirmed that a 31-year-old man was arrested on 8 September on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent, blackmail, and driving without a licence. He has been bailed while enquiries continue.
In a statement on Tuesday, Tottenham said, “We have been providing support for Destiny and his family since the incident and will continue to do so. Given this is a legal matter, we cannot comment any further.”
Udogie, 22, joined Tottenham from Udinese in 2022 for £15 million on a five-year deal and spent the 2022–23 season back at the Serie A club on loan. He returned to Spurs at the start of the 2023–24 campaign and has since made 76 appearances for the north London side.
The Italian full-back has featured 10 times this season, including in Tuesday night’s 4-0 win over Copenhagen in the Champions League league phase.
