Political parties heavily violated the campaign expenditure limit during the 13th parliamentary election, according to Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).

TIB said BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami exceeded the expenditure limit the most among the major political parties. The observation was made at a press conference at its Dhaka office on Monday.

BNP overspent by 327.5 percent, while Jamaat exceeded the limit by 159.1 percent.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) also appeared on the list of violators, exceeding the limit by 19 percent.

TIB said the findings were based on a study of 70 constituencies, analyzing party- and candidate-run online platforms and affidavits submitted during the national polls, reflecting the overall scenario across the country.

On average, BNP candidates spent Tk1.99 crore on campaigning, while Jamaat candidates spent Tk1.24 crore and NCP candidates Tk83 lakh.

Among other parties, Jatiya Party candidates on average spent Tk2.24 crore during the campaigning period and Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidates have an average campaign expense of Tk85 lakh.
