Tom Holland has revealed that he mistakenly believed director Christopher Nolan disliked his performance on the first day of filming The Odyssey before learning that technical limitations caused the repeated interruptions.
Entertainment outlet Variety reported that, speaking to Fandango, Holland said Nolan kept calling for cuts during a scene with co-star Jon Bernthal. The actor admitted the frequent stops left him worried that something had gone wrong with his performance. He later discovered that the director paused filming because the IMAX camera magazines could record only about three minutes of footage at a time.
Holland said stunt coordinator George Cottle explained the reason behind the interruptions, which immediately eased his concerns. He admitted that, until then, he feared he had performed badly in the scene.
In The Odyssey, Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 17 July. The cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth and John Leguizamo.
Despite his nervous start, Holland described working with Nolan as the finest experience of his career during a recent interview with GQ. He praised Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for their professionalism and creative approach. Holland said watching their filmmaking process up close and collaborating with Nolan gave him an invaluable learning experience.
