Bangladesh Coast Guard and Department of Fisheries have seized illegal fishing nets valued at around Tk75 crore during a joint operation in Moheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar.
Coast Guard East Zone Media Officer Lt Commander Suman Al Mukit confirmed the matter on Friday.
According to officials, acting on a tip-off, a day-long special combing operation was carried out on Wednesday in the Jelepara adjacent area of Moheshkhali.
During the drive, around 50 lakh metres of illegal nets were recovered, carrying an estimated market value of Tk75 crore.
However, no arrests were made as the individuals involved fled the scene upon sensing the presence of the Coast Guard.
Lt Commander Suman Al Mukit noted that the seized illegal nets were destroyed in accordance with official regulations in the presence of the Moheshkhali Upazila Fisheries Officer.
