Police recovered the bodies of three members of a family from a rented house in Ashulia’s Narasinghpur area on Sunday night.
The deceased were identified as Rubel Ahmed, 35, his wife Sonia Akhter, 30, and their five-year-old daughter Jamila. Originally from Naldanga village in Dhunot upazila of Bogura, the family had been living in a tin-shed house near the No. 3 gate of Ha-Meem Group’s factory in Ashulia.
Police said the room was found locked from inside. Around 8:00pm, law enforcers broke it open and discovered Rubel’s body hanging from a ceiling fan, while his wife and daughter lay dead on the bed.
Locals said the couple, both garment workers, had not responded to repeated calls since the afternoon, prompting neighbours to inform police.
Preliminary investigation suggests Rubel strangled his wife and poisoned his daughter before killing himself. However, the motive remains unclear. Neighbours claimed the family had been under pressure due to mounting debts.
“Based on locals’ information, we recovered the bodies of three people from a tin-shed house. Primarily, it appears that the husband killed his wife and child before committing suicide. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after autopsy,” said Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Mozibur Rahman.
The bodies were sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
