In a country whose history is defined mostly by struggle and resilience, few literary voices have shaped its cultural conscience as profoundly as Selina Hossain. Born on June 14, 1947, she is an iconic Bangladeshi novelist, essayist, children’s writer and a powerful advocate of women in contemporary Bengali literature.
Born in Rajshahi, Selina began her literary journey while studying at the University of Rajshahi in the late 1960s. Her first story collection, ‘Utshe Theke Nirontor’, was published in 1969. From that promising beginning blossomed a prolific career spanning over 40 novels, numerous short stories, children’s books and essays.
Each of these works is marked by a deep empathy for the human condition and a fearless examination of societal complexities.
Selina’s writings have earned her virtually every major national honour: Bangla Academy Literary Award, Ekushey Padak and the Independence Award, which is the highest civilian decoration in Bangladesh. Her stories have crossed linguistic borders and have been translated into languages as varied as English, French, Japanese and Finnish.
What sets Selina apart is her experimental narrative voice. She is known for blending traditional storytelling with interior monologues and symbolic rhythms, crafting stories that feel both deeply personal and political. Her works reflect the tension of contemporary life, the passage of time, the struggle of the masses, the weight of history- all while not losing sight of individual hearts and minds.
Her ‘Hangor Nodi Grenade’ is a poignant novel that confronts us with the brutal reality of war. It is about how a mother sacrifices her only son to save the freedom fighters during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. ‘Poka Makorer Ghor Basati’ is another socially evocative work of hers. These stories mirror a nation’s evolving identity, challenging injustices and uplifting voices that are often overlooked.
Beyond her pen, Selina also played a part in our national cultural leadership. She has served as the chairperson of the Bangladesh Shishu Academy. In 2022, she was appointed President of Bangla Academy and served there until 2024.
More than a celebrated author, Selina Hossain stands as a custodian of Bangladesh’s literary and cultural spirit. Her work continues to influence new generations of readers and writers alike. She inspires women who find both representation and courage in her stories. Her legacy shows us that our very words have the power to shape the nation’s conscience.
