President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid tribute at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Saturday morning, formally beginning his official duties as head of state.
Around 10:30am, he placed a wreath at the memorial to honour the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and then stood in silence for a few moments.
Following the tribute, a contingent of the armed forces presented the new president with a guard of honour.
As the country’s 23rd president, Mirza Fakhrul also planted a sapling on the memorial grounds and signed the visitors’ book.
Security around the memorial was tightened from early morning in anticipation of the presidential visit.
