More than 70 years after J.R.R. Tolkien introduced readers to Middle-earth, The Hobbit is set to return in a new form. This time, Bilbo Baggins’ legendary adventure will unfold as a Magic: The Gathering trading card game expansion.
According to ScreenRant, Magic: The Gathering – The Hobbit will launch worldwide on 14 August 2026 as a full Standard-legal set under Wizards of the Coast’s Universes Beyond series. The release will retell the complete story of The Hobbit, bringing Bilbo’s journey to the tabletop in a way never seen before.
The new expansion follows the commercial success of 2023’s The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. Unlike that release, the upcoming set focuses entirely on the events of The Hobbit. It features Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, Smaug, Elrond and the Company of Dwarves, alongside many of Tolkien’s most iconic locations and moments.
The set also introduces several collectible designs. Among the highlights are Dragon Hoard showcase cards inspired by the treasures of Erebor, featuring alternate artwork and frames. Full-art basic lands will depict Bilbo’s journey from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain.
Wizards of the Coast will also release seasonal full-art Plains portraying the Shire during spring, summer, autumn and winter. These cards will be available exclusively through pre-release packs, bundles and gift bundles. Collector boosters will once again include exclusive premium variants, including surge foil cards.
The company has also announced a packed schedule of themed events following the launch. These include pre-release tournaments, Standard Showdowns, Commander Parties and two Magic Spotlight: The Hobbit tournaments. Collectors are already anticipating ultra-rare cards such as Gleaming Gold Smaug, while competitive players are eager to see how characters including Bilbo, Thorin and Smaug influence the Standard metagame.
Support for the expansion will continue beyond launch. Wizards has confirmed that a Battle of Five Armies Co-Op Kit will arrive in 2027, expanding the tabletop adaptation of Tolkien’s classic adventure with additional content. Combined with new artwork, cinematic showcase treatments and cards recreating Bilbo’s famous journey “there and back again”, the set is shaping up to be another major Middle-earth release for Magic: The Gathering fans.
