Marvel Studios is finally bringing back the team behind The Defenders, but the long-awaited reunion may not happen in the way fans expected, reported on COLLIDER.
The franchise, which began on Netflix before Marvel shifted its focus to Disney+, has slowly returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). According to reports, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 brings together several major characters from the original Defenderverse.
The Disney+ series mainly follows Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil. However, several key members of The Defenders have already returned.
Season 1 featured the comeback of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. The character will also appear on the big screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Earlier, Season 2 brought back Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones and introduced Mike Colter as Luke Cage.
Leaked set photos now suggest that Finn Jones will return as Danny Rand, also known as Iron Fist, while Élodie Yung may reprise her role as Elektra. If confirmed, the original Defenders lineup will reunite after years apart, although the team may not receive its own standalone title.
The Defenders remains a unique chapter in Marvel’s television history. In 2015, Marvel partnered with Netflix to create a connected group of shows linked to the MCU. At the time, the series shared the same universe as Marvel’s films but remained mostly separate from the main movie storyline.
Each hero received an individual series before the crossover event. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist built their stories across multiple seasons before joining forces in the eight-episode The Defenders series.
The return of these characters now highlights how much the entertainment industry has changed. Streaming platforms today often focus on faster connections between characters and major crossover events.
Despite the long wait, Marvel still considers The Defenders part of the MCU’s history. Fans have already created theories about how the team could join future multiverse stories. Many believe seeing all four heroes together again would become a major moment for both the characters and audiences.
However, the biggest challenge remains finding space for the team in Marvel’s expanding storyline. The MCU is currently moving towards Avengers: Doomsday, where multiple characters and universes are expected to collide.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 started filming in March, but Marvel has not announced a release date. With the upcoming projects already packed with major events, it remains unclear when the full Defenders reunion could happen.
Fans have also suggested other possibilities, including connecting Danny Rand with Shang-Chi’s storyline. With the multiverse opening more possibilities, Marvel has several options to bring the group together.
For now, The Defenders and their individual series remain available on Disney+, alongside Daredevil: Born Again. The team’s return may take time, but Marvel appears ready to bring the heroes back into the MCU’s future.
