A teacher died after falling from a rickshaw when muggers tried to snatch her handbag in front of the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Manik Mia Avenue Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Ranjila Parvin, 55, headteacher of Bagbari Government Primary School in Bogura and daughter of Moyez Uddin Sarker of Sonakania village in Gabtoli upazila.

Police said Ranjila had travelled overnight from Bogura to Dhaka for eye treatment. After arriving at Gabtoli Bus Terminal in the morning, she hired a rickshaw to go to Islamia Eye Hospital in Farmgate.

As the rickshaw reached the South Plaza of the parliament building around 6am, several muggers on a motorcycle tried to snatch her handbag. She fell onto the road, sustaining a severe head injury.

She was rescued and taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Her body has been kept in the hospital morgue for post‑mortem examination.

Ibn Mizan, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon Division, said police are working to identify and arrest the fleeing muggers.
