The holy Ashura is being observed across the country with profound solemnity, honouring its history of mourning and sacrifice. In line with nationwide observances, a Tazia procession was held in Barisal to mark the occasion.

The procession was brought out at 9:30am on Friday from Notun Bazar Morok-kholar Pol area of the city. As in previous years, the event was organised by the Pak Panjatan Parishad.

Carrying colourful flags and banners and festoons inscribed with religious slogans, the procession paraded through the city’s main thoroughfares. The organisers stated that the procession was held to remember all the martyrs of Karbala.

They further expressed a message of communal harmony, saying “Through this procession, we want to send a message to society that whether Shia or Sunni, our primary identity is that we are all Muslims”.

In addition to the morning procession, the Pak Panjatan Parishad has organised a special prayer and an Ashura mahfil for Friday evening.

To ensure safety, security measures were strengthened across the city. Members of various law enforcement agencies, including the Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), accompanied the procession to maintain order.
