Tension has escalated in Sylhet’s Beaniibazar Upazila following demands by a local group called “Tawhidi Janata” to cancel a traditional boat race scheduled to take place on the Sunai River on 28 August.
Despite the opposition, the organisers remain firm in their stance to hold the long-standing cultural event. The preparation for the annual boat race is being led by youths of Lauta and Bahadurpur areas of Lauta Union.
Organisers have pointed out that no disputes or obstacles arose during previous editions of the competition, saying this is the first time a demand for its suspension has been raised under the banner of “Tawhidi Janata Lauta Union.”
The opposing viewpoints shared on social media over the last few days have triggered local tension amongst residents.
In an effort to keep the situation under control, former Chairman of Lauta Union Parishad Gous Uddin said discussions are currently underway with both parties to resolve the dispute and de-escalate the situation.
Beanibazar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Umme Habiba Majumder confirmed that while the boat race is an annual tradition on Sunai River, a faction has demanded its suspension this year.
According to the UNO, the group argued that a homicide occurred last year in connection with the boat race, which was subsequently discussed at a local mosque.
UNO Majumder further said that while boat racing is a traditional sport, the organisers have not yet informed the administration or sought the necessary permission for this year’s event.
She assured that if the organisers formally notify the administration and law enforcement agencies and secure the required permissions, the administration will extend all-out cooperation.
Meanwhile, Beanibazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Jafar Mohammad Mahfuzul Karim said he was not previously aware of the dispute or the scheduled event. He added that the police are looking into the matter and will take the necessary measures to address the situation.
