Former Bangladesh captain and current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Tamim Iqbal has been awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
In a statement on Sunday, the MCC announced that it had elected five international cricketers to Honorary Life Membership. Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Mel Jones, Cheteshwar Pujara and Tamim have all accepted the Club’s offer.
In a media release, the MCC said, “Tamim becomes one of a select number from Bangladesh to be awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Club and is one of the country’s most celebrated cricketers.”
It added, “He was recently appointed President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the youngest to assume the role.”
Tamim made his Test debut in 2008 and went on to score more than 5,000 runs, the second-highest tally for Bangladesh in the format. He is one of only a handful of Bangladeshi players to feature on the Honours Boards at Lord’s, following his century against England in 2010.
The left-hander also amassed more than 8,000 runs in 243 One-Day Internationals, remaining Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in the 50-over format. He was named one of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack’s Cricketers of the Year and Wisden’s Test Cricketer of the Year in 2011.
Earlier, former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to receive Honorary Life Membership of the MCC in 2023.
Shakib Al Hasan, meanwhile, became the first Bangladeshi to join the prestigious MCC World Cricket Committee in October 2017. He later stepped down in October 2019 after being suspended from all cricket-related activities for one year by the ICC.
