Bangladesh Cricket Board Ad Hoc Committee chairman Tamim Iqbal has spoken openly about the upcoming BCB election, expressing his hope for a transparent and inclusive contest whilst confirming that he will stand as a candidate for a director’s position when voting takes place on 7 June.
Speaking to the media on Thursday 21 May, Tamim acknowledged that he holds a certain degree of name recognition heading into the election but was clear that he intends to earn votes on merit rather than reputation alone.
“I will need to go to the voters and tell them what I want to do and what I do not want to do,” he said. “I will need to share my goals with them. I will not deny that I have an advantage, but that advantage will count for little when it actually comes to voting. I will need to engage with them properly, make them understand what I think about Bangladesh cricket and what my plans are.”
Tamim was equally emphatic that he has distanced himself entirely from the administrative side of the election process, leaving all organisational matters to the Election Commission.
“I have removed myself completely from that side of things,” he said. “Everything is entirely in the hands of the Election Commission. The difference is that I am not signing any letters and I am not processing any councillorship returns.”
The BCB election schedule has already been formally announced. Provided everything proceeds as planned, polling will be held on 7 June. Tamim expressed a straightforward wish for the process to be open and fair, with broad participation from all eligible voters.
“I hope it will be an open election,” he said. “Everyone will participate, everyone will campaign in their own way.”
