Tetulia, the northernmost upazila of Panchagarh, has long been a favourite for nature lovers. From here, the snow-capped Kanchenjunga can be seen on clear days. The flatland tea gardens, the Banglabandha zero point, the banks of the Mahananda river, the district council’s rest house, and Tetulia Picnic Corner are among its attractions that continue to draw tourists year-round.
But recently, a single tree has become the centre of attention. A century-old tamarind tree standing in the heart of Tetulia’s Chourasta Bazar has been given a fresh look under the initiative of the local administration.
For decades, the tree was valued by residents as a symbol of heritage, a source of shade, and a resting place. Tourists too found it intriguing, but it remained neglected for years. That has now changed.
The Tetulia upazila administration has cleaned the area around the tree and introduced a creative lighting system. As night falls, the tree glows with vibrant colours, transforming into what many describe as a living artwork.
Tourists say the new look has made the landmark even more appealing. Pictures of the illuminated tree have already gone viral on social media.
Abdur Rahman, a visitor from Dhaka, said the transformation surprised him. “I had seen this tree before when it was in a neglected state. Now, with the lights on at night, it feels like a completely new creation. It looks beautiful.”
Another tourist, Malia Khanam from Rangpur, said the tamarind tree was the first thing that caught her eye in Tetulia. “In the daytime it looks ordinary, but at night with the lights, it is extraordinary. I took many photos.”
Locals believe the initiative has not only revived the historic tree but also added a new dimension to Tetulia’s tourism.
Ahsan Habib, director of North Bengal Travel and Tourism, said the administration’s efforts deserve praise. “This tree was neglected for so long. Now, with this makeover, it has become a symbol of Tetulia’s tourism. Such initiatives will enrich the sector further.”
Tetulia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Afroz Shaheen Khasru said the tree is a part of the region’s history and culture. “During the day, people enjoy sitting under its shade, and at night they experience its beauty in lights. We have cleaned the surroundings and set up illumination. Tourists are enjoying it immensely,” he said.
He added that the administration is working on other projects to enhance Tetulia as a complete tourist destination. The Tetulia Picnic Corner and Mahananda Park are being redeveloped, a walkway has been built along the Mahananda River, and a dedicated children’s park is under construction. “We want Tetulia to emerge as a full-fledged destination for visitors,” he said.
