SZA has dismissed online rumours suggesting she was paid to serve as a backup performer for Justin Bieber at Coachella 2026 in case the headliner dropped out.
The speculation, which circulated on social media, claimed the singer had been hired to step in if Bieber, who is headlining the festival alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Karol G, was unable to perform.
Responding on Instagram, SZA rejected the claim and questioned its origins. “Lmao, who made this up? I’ve seen this four times now. I’m in New York, no one paid me a dime. Wishing everyone the best,” she wrote.
The rumour originated from an unverified post suggesting she had been paid a six-figure sum to remain “Coachella ready” as a contingency act.
While SZA shut down the claims, fans continued to speculate online about a possible surprise appearance during Bieber’s set, noting past collaborations between the two artists.
Bieber, who is headlining the festival, has previously hinted at plans to blend material from his recent albums with older tracks. Speaking on a livestream, he said he intended to perform songs from both Swag projects and revisit earlier hits, describing Coachella as a space where he feels comfortable performing.
The singer has also drawn attention at the festival through fashion moments linked to Bieber, including themed outfits worn by Kylie Jenner, who referenced his music on social media while attending the event.
