Tottenham Hotspur slipped into the relegation zone on Sunday after a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, with Roberto De Zerbi losing his first match in charge as Spurs’ Premier League crisis deepened.
Tottenham needed control. They got frustration instead. Sunderland played with urgency, while Spurs drifted without cutting edge.
The numbers now look brutal. Spurs have not won in their last 10 league games. They sit 18th with just seven wins from 32 matches.
That run drags them into real danger. Burnley sit just below, Wolves prop up the table, and the margin for error has vanished. Tottenham now fight for survival, not ambition.
De Zerbi refused to hide behind excuses. “I am disappointed because we did not deserve to lose this match.” He defended the performance, but results write the story.
He pushed the point further. “We played well; maybe not enough to win, but we were unlucky in several situations in the first half.” That sounds fair, but luck rarely explains a 10-game winless run.
He backed his players without hesitation. “I cannot blame the players because their mentality and fighting spirit were one hundred per cent.” He praised effort, but effort alone will not drag Spurs out of trouble.
The real issue sits deeper. Tottenham move the ball but fail to hurt teams. They lack sharpness in the final third, and opponents punish that softness.
Time now tightens around them. Six matches remain, and every point carries weight. If Spurs do not respond quickly, this slide will end in relegation.
