Sylhet won the boys’ title and Rangpur claimed the girls’ crown in the football event of the first edition of the Notun Kuri Sports tournament on Monday.
The finals took place at the Bangladesh Army Stadium in Dhaka.
Sylhet defeated Mymensingh 1-0 in the boys’ final. Arman Khan Jisan scored the only goal of the match.
Rangpur dominated the girls’ final and beat Rajshahi 4-0 to lift the trophy.
The boys’ final was closely contested from the opening whistle. Both teams created several chances.
Mymensingh came close to scoring in the third minute after creating an opening inside the penalty area. However, the Sylhet defence stood firm.
A minute later, Mymensingh stopped a dangerous Sylhet attack.
Sylhet nearly took the lead in the sixth minute, but the Mymensingh goalkeeper made a fine diving save.
Neither side managed to score before the break.
Sylhet controlled the midfield in the second half. In the 58th minute, Arafat Rafi tried his luck with a powerful long range effort from outside the penalty area. His shot flew just over the crossbar.
A minute later, Arman Khan Jisan broke the deadlock. He scored with a brilliant long range strike from midfield. That proved to be the winning goal.
In the girls’ final, Rangpur went ahead in the eighth minute.
Rajshahi goalkeeper Mosammat Misti tried to clear the ball inside the penalty area. Her clearance struck Smriti Kisko and went into the net.
Two minutes later, Kisko doubled Rangpur’s lead with a header from a corner.
Rangpur made it 3-0 before half time. Tanvi scored after receiving the ball from Kisko’s cross, which had taken a touch off a defender.
Sumaiya added the fourth goal in the 52nd minute to complete a comfortable victory for Rangpur.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the closing ceremony at the Bangladesh Army Stadium and watched the finals.
