The government has initiated a major restructuring of the top leadership at the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC), appointing a new chairman and three full-time members.
The current chairman, Dr Mesbahuddin Ahmed, and three full-time members have been relieved of their duties to make way for the new appointees.
On Monday, the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education issued four separate notifications regarding these changes.
Prof Md Akhter Hossain has been appointed as the new chairman of the BAC. He is currently the vice-chancellor of the State University of Bangladesh and previously served as the dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Dhaka.
Furthermore, three new full-time members have been appointed to the council, Ahmed Abdullah Jamal, treasurer of Central Women’s University and a retired professor of the Department of History at the University of Dhaka.
The other two are, Md Shah Amran, professor in the Department of Pharmacy at Independent University, Bangladesh, and former chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Dhaka; and Md Wakilur Rahman, professor in the Department of Rural Sociology at Bangladesh Agricultural University.
The three members who have been relieved of their positions are Prof Md Golam Shahi Alam, Gulshan Ara Latifa, and Prof SM Kabir.
According to the notifications, the newly appointed chairman and members will receive salaries, allowances, and other associated benefits in accordance with the Bangladesh Accreditation Council Act, 2017.
