Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapan has warned that fugitive fascist elements and covert forces may exploit internal competition within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) ahead of the upcoming local government elections to create divisions within the party.

He alleged that the two groups were conspiring to create chaos across the country and urged BNP leaders and activists to remain vigilant against provocations.

Swapan made the remarks at a series of meetings with BNP leaders and activists in different unions of Gournadi and Agailjhara upazilas in Barishal, which fall within his parliamentary constituency, over the past few days.

Barishal North District BNP Member Secretary Mizanur Rahman Khan Mukul attended the views-exchange meetings as a special guest, alongside upazila and union-level party leaders.

Swapan said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had already informed the nation about intelligence reports indicating attempts to create unrest across the country.

The Prime Minister had also referred to attempts to provoke unrest among workers at factories in several parts of the country, he added.

Calling for greater vigilance, Swapan urged BNP leaders and activists to maintain strong unity to thwart any conspiracy against the party.

He stressed that internal competition surrounding the local government elections must not be allowed to weaken BNP or obstruct development activities.
