The latest ‘Hunger Games’ film has earned enthusiastic early reactions, with critics praising Joseph Zada’s portrayal of young Haymitch Abernathy and calling the prequel a powerful addition to the popular franchise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ premiered in London on Wednesday, 28 October, prompting a wave of first impressions on social media.
Full reviews are expected closer to the film’s theatrical release on 20 November.
Several critics have praised the film’s performances, production design and emotional depth. Some have even described it as the strongest instalment in the franchise so far.
Joseph Zada, who plays the younger version of Haymitch, has emerged as a particular highlight. The character was previously played by Woody Harrelson in the original films.
Critic Griffin Schiller compared the prequel to ‘Rogue One’ and ‘Andor’, saying it explores the devastating cost of loss and rebellion. He also praised the film as a faithful adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ novel.
Collider’s Perri Nemiroff singled out Zada’s performance, highlighting his ability to capture Haymitch’s warmth and charm alongside the anger and heartbreak brought on by the Games.
She described the role as a major breakthrough for the young actor.
Other early reactions have praised the film’s casting and visual craftsmanship. Critics also highlighted Glenn Close’s performance, while some said the production design keeps the familiar world of Panem engaging.
Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film adapts Collins’ 2025 novel of the same name. It follows 16-year-old Haymitch from District 12 on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, in which twice the usual number of tributes compete.
The cast includes Jesse Plemons as Plutarch, Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, Mckenna Grace and Whitney Peak.
The film is the second prequel to the original ‘Hunger Games’ series, following ‘The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’.
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are also expected to return as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, with Harrelson reprising his role as Haymitch.
‘S unrise on the Reaping’ is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 20 November.
