The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has brought Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dwip in for questioning in connection with the death of former Bangladesh Air Force Flight Lieutenant KM Tahsif Sauri, who was found dead in the Turag River a day after going missing.
Dwip, who was close to Tahsif, spent around five and a half hours with him before his disappearance.
Superintendent of Police Abu Yusuf of the PBI headquarters confirmed the development, saying Dwip was taken to the PBI Dhaka Metropolitan North office on Thursday night for questioning and information gathering.
Investigators are verifying the details he provided about the places he and Tahsif visited and their movements before Tahsif went missing.
A police source said members of the law enforcement agencies took Dwip from his residence in Block B of Babar Road in Mohammadpur on Thursday night. He is the son of Selim Reza, a local resident.
The development comes after Tahsif’s body was recovered from the Turag River on Wednesday afternoon.
Members of the Tongi River Police Outpost recovered the body from an area near Rajabari Ghat at around 4pm, according to river police sources.
An internal report of the river police said the National Emergency Service 999 received a call around 4:30pm reporting a body floating in the river. A team from the Tongi River Police Outpost subsequently reached the spot and recovered it.
Police prepared an inquest report before sending the body to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
He was later laid to rest at a graveyard in Uttara’s Sector 12.
Tahsif left home on the evening of October 27 after telling his mother, “Dwip is coming; I’ll go and talk to him.”
He never returned.
According to Dwip, he had spent time with Tahsif from around 11:30pm until midnight on the night before the incident. He said Tahsif appeared normal and cheerful during their meeting and described his death as mysterious.
CCTV footage shows Dwip arriving on a motorcycle at the garage beneath Tahsif’s residence at 6:24pm on 27 October.
The two exchange a handshake before leaving the premises on separate motorcycles at 6:31pm, according to the footage.
Investigators are now examining Dwip’s account of their movements and other information as part of the inquiry into Tahsif’s death.
