West Bengal has received an unexpected tourism boost, courtesy Bollywood actor Sunny Leone, without any official campaign or expenditure.
According to a report by The Telegraph, the actor sent social media into a tizzy after posting a beachside photograph on Facebook. Her caption posed a simple question: “Maldives or Mandarmani?”
The actual location in the photograph remains unconfirmed. However, internet users quickly concluded that the picture featured Mandarmani, a growing beach destination in East Midnapore district.
Social media users based their verdict on the water’s appearance. The Maldives is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and picture-perfect lagoons. In contrast, the water visible behind Leone in the photograph appeared muddy, prompting comparisons to Mandarmani’s coastal waters.
One Facebook user confidently declared: “This is Mandarmani. The Maldives’ water isn’t this muddy.”
The single social media post proved sufficient to make Mandarmani a trending topic. Comments on various platforms heightened the unofficial tourism campaign. One user remarked: “Splitzvilla episode in Mandarmani?” while another joked: “Will Mandarmani now get a crowd like Goa?”
Another user wrote: “The whole of Bengal is heading to Mandarmani now.” Several others predicted that securing a resort booking would soon become harder than obtaining a bank loan.
One social media user admitted: “Did she really mention Mandarmani? We have been underestimating this place all this time.”
The commentary continued with playful speculation. One user suggested Leone probably took the Esplanade-to-Digha bus before arriving in Mandarmani. Another predicted the beach would soon resemble the weekend crowds of neighbouring Digha, Bengal’s more established beach destination.
The debate over whether Sunny Leone actually visited Mandarmani has become largely irrelevant. For Bengal’s monsoon tourism sector, Mandarmani has emerged as an unexpected crowd-puller, offering a much-needed reset for the industry.
This incident highlights how a single social media caption can achieve what expensive advertising campaigns often struggle to accomplish. If internet users had their way, one post would suffice as a state’s tourism campaign.
The development follows a pattern where celebrities have inadvertently promoted tourism destinations. Assam has Priyanka Chopra and Gujarat has Amitabh Bachchan as official tourism ambassadors. Bengal, however, has stumbled upon its celebrity mascot without spending any money or even requesting participation.
While West Bengal’s tourism department has not yet commented on the development, the online buzz has already generated significant interest in Mandarmani as a monsoon getaway.
