Luis Suarez scored the only goal as Inter Miami beat CF Montreal 1-0 in Major League Soccer on Sunday.
The veteran striker converted a penalty in the 81st minute. The spot kick came after German Berterame was fouled inside the box during a serious collision.
Berterame suffered a head injury after crashing into Montreal defender Efrain Morales. The Inter Miami forward lost consciousness and left the stadium in an ambulance.
Interim coach Guillermo Hoyos later gave a positive update on the striker.
“Berterame is conscious and is doing well. The blow was very strong but he is recovering,” Hoyos said.
Suarez calmly sent the ball past goalkeeper Sebastian Breza to score his ninth goal of the season. He has now scored six goals in his last three matches.
Goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo made two saves for Inter Miami. It was his second clean sheet of the season in only his third start.
Breza made one save for Montreal. The Canadian club slipped to another defeat after struggling since the World Cup break.
Lionel Messi missed his second straight match after returning from the World Cup, where Argentina finished runners up.
New signing Casemiro made his MLS debut for Inter Miami. The Brazilian midfielder joined the club after a successful spell with Real Madrid.
Inter Miami have now won six matches in a row. They have also beaten Montreal in their last three meetings.
Montreal have scored only one goal in three matches since the World Cup break. They have lost two of those games and drawn one.
Inter Miami will host the Columbus Crew in their next league match. Montreal will face the New England Revolution at home.
