Students of Shaheed Najmul Haque Girls’ High School and their guardians staged a demonstration in front of the school gate in Rajshahi city on Tuesday morning, demanding immediate removal of a teacher on a charge of sexually harassing female students.
During the demonstration, the protestors also blocked a road in Rajshahi city, chanting slogans: “We want a safe school”. They demanded immediate dismissal of Shahabub Alam, an assistant teacher of the school.
The students withdrew the road blockade after Abul Kalam Azad, acting headmaster of the school, assured the protestors of taking proper action against the accused teacher.
However, the protesters threatened that they will resume demonstrations if an immediate action is not taken.
Earlier on Monday, similar protests were held for several hours. Guardians claimed that Shahabub Alam had been taking advantage of situations to assault female students.
On September 2, he allegedly harassed a fourth-grade student in the school’s stairwell after school hours. Students’ guardians filed a formal complaint with the acting headmaster on Sunday against Shahbub, who already denied the allegations.
